DD1101 - Assignment 11 Multi style character design

Assignment 11 - Multi Style Character Design
For this assignment I was asked to create 3 designs of the same character, in 3 different styles; these styles were to be based upon that of the artists: Sean Galloway, Ashley Wood and Marek Okon. These artists have significant differences between each of their styles which is what will make this assignment the most difficult, as I will no doubt be able to imitate the style of a particular artist well whereas for another I will have a lot of trouble.
Sean Galloway is a cartoon style artist that uses a simplistic style that exaggerates all of the characters he draws to mirror their personalities; for example: when he draws a more devious character, he will make them far more skinny with an angular looking face to give the impression of fragility but also an evil mind, whereas when he draws a strong character he will exaggerate their proportions excessively to show clearly how strong they actually are in comparison to others.
Ashley Wood has a more complex drawing style, as she has a balance between realism mixed with a style that shows brush strokes; as her style has a sense of realism its already difficult to imitate, but with the inclusion of the painted style that she employs to create her art, this makes it even more difficult as their is a certain abstract choice that comes with her colour palettes for each piece she designs.
The final artist is Marek Okon and his style is by far the most realistic of the three artists as it relies on the realistic use of light and colour to show detail and give the piece more texture. His style would seem like the most difficult to follow but as I am trying to push my own style more towards realism, this style is good practice for me as it allows me to look into how lighting and colour is very important to make realistic pictures look right.

DD1101 - Assignment 10 Envrionment Design

Assignment 10 - Environment Design

This assignment is all about designing and drawing out an environment based on a building in Manchester. I have chosen the Hilton hotel which is well known in Manchester; I have used the hotel to create the idea of an elevated prison, which will have a Victorian/gothic design or feel. The difficulty with this assignment will definitely be making sure that the whole building is in perspective, and also because of my choice of aesthetic design it will make the perspective even more difficult to keep in check.
I will be using various sources and Google images to look up and take influence to design the look of the building, I will also be looking at the Manchester town hall as it has an actual gothic feel to it.
This is the final design of the Hilton inspired prison; I like the overall design that I have given it but I think there is more I could add to it, to make it far more gothic style and exemplify how grim this building would actually be.

DD1101 - Assignment 9 Vehicle Design

Assignment 9: Vehicle Design

For this assignment I was tasked with designing a vehicle and its driver. I am apprehensive about this project as I am not used to drawing vehicles and I am at a loss on where to begin.

Initially I was thinking of connecting this project to the previous assignment which had me designing a character with weapons and armour, as that would give me a strong basis on how to make the design look; that said I was looking at designing a motorcycle as that would be the most suitable mode of transport for the biker thug that I had designed.

After a short period of not being able to design the motorbike that I wanted I decided to move onto something different; this being a roller vehicle, similar to that of the recent Men in Black 3 film and also that of General Grievous' attack cycle.

After a short process of elimination of various parts of the vehicle I was able to come up with the final design (below), this encompassed everything that I liked from the designs. This assignment was more tasking than that of previous assignments as it definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, but I think that I produced a sufficient piece of work.
This is a simple design for the pilot, I didn't put as much thought into the pilot as the vehicle because the vehicle was definitely the main point of interest for this assignment.

DD1101 - Assignment 8 Weapon and Armour Design

Assignment 8 - Weapon and Armour Design

For this assignment I have been tasked with designing a set of weapons and a set of armour for a character of my own choice; I have to create four weapons for the character, one heavy weapon, one standard weapon, one light weapon and finally a concealed weapon and also I have to design a set of armour for the character in question. As I have been given freedom to design whatever armour and weapons I want for this assignment I am looking forward to seeing what I can come up with for it.

As I already had an idea of the character that I wanted to design for, this made the weapon designing and armour ideas far easier, although choosing what weapons to use has been a slight nuisance, as there is a wide variety of weapons that I could choose from; although due to the particular character I wanted to choose weapons that suited his profession and look rather than just what I thought was a good idea at the time.

I started learning more about referencing in the next lesson, which will allow me increase the speed at which I draw anything, and also use referencing in a way that allows me to create a good pose/etc. For characters, creatures, weapons. I also started colouring a couple of the weapons that I have designed for my character, these weapons are; a broadsword and a shotgun, although the shotgun I might change to be from a earlier time period as it will allow me to add more detail because it would be a bit more worn than a modern shotgun would be. I am happy so far with the broadsword as there isn't anything particularly wrong with the design or the colour.

These are the designs that I have created for the weapons; the broadsword has stayed for the most part the same as only its hilt and guards design was changed dramatically, the shotgun had the biggest design change as I originally had designed a modern semi-automatic shotgun, but I had an idea suggested to me of making it an older style shotgun as it shows more progression through time if I did that, and I am very happy with the result due to I was able to add details into the shotgun that I wouldn't have been able to if I had done a modern one.
The two weapons that weren't mentioned before are weapons that I recently have decided on; as I am still following the idea of a different weapon from different time periods and from different places, I decided on an American Indian Tomahawk as the light weapon and then finally a Shaving Knife which will undoubtedly be the concealed weapon. The tomahawk didn't have too much of a difficult design to deal with, but I still looked up a few pictures on Google to be able to see actual designs and shapes of tomahawks, although I did try to add a design onto the leather sheath that covers the handle, I couldn't get a design I was happy with so I left it plain. The shaving knife didn't take too much work other than looking at basic designs that were emblazoned onto the handle and blade.
Overall I am very happy with the designs of these weapons, they have sufficient realism to them which I was hoping to achieve, but then also they have a sense of not being completely real due to some extras that I have added because of who the character will be.
This is the final design for my character, I am very happy with how both the armour/clothing has turned out as well as the weapons. I decided to put them all together to add to the picture as it shows some amount of realism of how he would actually carry all of his weapons. I think that the shading was defiantly something that I will need to improve on as I think it lets this picture down somewhat; also the I never usually do backgrounds in my pictures so it doesn't really match up with the quality of the character but doing backgrounds is something that I am aiming to get better at as time goes on.

DD1101 - Assignment 7 Drawing a charater from a book

Assignment 7:

For this assignment I was tasked with drawing a character from a specific book that I was asked to read, the character was a random choice as the book I had chosen was a popular choice; the book that I had chosen to read was The Sea of Ghosts: The Gravedigger Chronicles by Alan Campbell.

The character that I was given to draw, was Creedy, but Creedy in Brine; in The Sea of Ghosts brine is a toxic substance that mutates anything that comes into contact with it, and further into the book Creedy gets dumped into a vat of brine which then in turn mutates him into a mutant fish-man. Creedy himself is a very rough, brutish character that has little care for anyone but himself, almost a common thug in the way he spoke and acted.

Creedy was already an easy character to design as his character described how he would present himself very well, I also had a lot of fun designing him as I started looking into real life fish that looked freakish and ugly, as they are the kind of fish I think that Creedy would have started to resemble after excessive exposure to the brine.
This is my initial design of Creedy which I did just to get a basic idea of his human head shape and how his features were set out, in the book Creedy by this point had something of a clockwork eye in place of his right one as it was blown out earlier in the book, I left this part of him out until later as the facial design was the main part of Creedy at this point

These are the variety of designs for Creedy's mutated face, the designs were closely designed off of real fish that reside in the deep oceans, as these kinds of fish always look more terrifying than the majority of regular fish. One thing that I didn't want to do was to design a shark man, as this idea has been done many times and I think that designing him off of more unknown fish will make the designs stand out far more than that of a typical shark man design.
There are also some designs for the clockwork eye that I mentioned earlier, as the design was still crucial to making the whole design feel like it was related to Creedy I went through some basic designs of "eye patch" style clockwork eyes, which would also look fairly cheap and robotic.
This is the final full body design for Creedy, the clothing design I had taken from the actual description of various parts of clothing from the book as well as taken influence from other sources, for example in Fable 2 the video game there are enemies that are Prison Guards that have long black coats with large boots; this design immediately leapt to mind when I read the description of what Creedy was wearing.
I am overall very pleased with the design of Creedy that I have created as I think it shows a fairly good interpretation of how he would look once dunked in brine

DD1101 - Assignment 5 Clay Model

Assignment 5 - Clay Model

For this assignment I made a clay model of anything I wanted to make, I chose to create the anthropomorphic lizard/dragon "Guilmon" from the animated series "Digimon". This assignment allowed some practice drawing characters as I had to draw the shapes of the body parts that I would need to make.
As this was the first time that I had properly used modelling clay before, I was slightly tentative as I wasn't sure how the final product would turn out.

This is my clay model:

The overall final product was very pleasing, even though the clay model on its own didn't look that good, after the paint was applied it has turned out much better than I originally thought it would.

DD1101 - Assignment 6 Protagonists and Antagonists

Assignment 6 - Protagonists and Antagonists

For this assignment I was asked to create either a protagonist/hero or antagonist/villain character with an accompanying story to go with them. This assignment encompassed everything I had learnt so far from each of the other assignments which would allow me to practice and improve on what I already know. The character would be completely self-made so it also tested my creativity towards character design.
This assignment was a real test of my own creativity and although I enjoy drawing characters, etc. I was still quite unsure and tentative about how well I would be able to portray my idea.

The final outcome of this assignment wasn't as pleasing as I had hoped, although the overall character or the design isn't particularly bad I am still not satisfied with how long it took me to concieve the idea, as well as the actual characters overall design.
